Croatian translation – a language overview

Croatian is a standardised register of the Serbo-Croatian language. It is spoken predominantly by Croats in Croatia, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Romania, Slovenia and other neighbouring regions.

The language is made up of four main dialects and national standards; Shtokavian, Chakavian, Kajkavian, and Torlakian. It is written in Gaj’s Latin alphabet.

Croatian has 30 phonemes, made up of five vowels and 25 consonants. There are 30 letters in the Croatian alphabet, three of which are digraphs. The orthography, as a result, is largely phonemic.
