What is subtitling?

Subtitles are created from a transcript of a commentary, dialogue, film, television programme or video game. They are displayed at the bottom of the screen, though can sometimes appear at the top of the screen as well.

Why choose subtitling for your media?

Subtitling remains one of the more low-cost options to reach your wider audience in another language and also enables original audio to be heard, which contributes to authenticity, as the intonation and speech style of the original speaker is maintained. It is a particularly good form of communication for the likes of:

  • Documentaries
  • Training material
  • E-Learning
  • Online video content
  • Television programmes
  • Film

The three types of subtitling services:

Same Language Captions
Subtitles within the same language are mainly intended for the deaf/hard of hearing and subtitling into another language for film or television. In terms of subtitle translation, it is the quickest and the cheapest method of translating content, and allows viewers to hear the original dialogue and voices of the actors. The one advantage of same language subtitles is that they encourage literacy amongst viewers as they are watching and reading without thinking about it!

Translated Subtitles
This is where the dialogue/commentary etc. is translated into a foreign language and is a highly technical process requiring minute attention to detail and understanding of the strict parameters that rule the world of subtitles. Translation in the form of subtitling is often very different to the translation of written text. Furthermore the subtitler needs to take into consideration time and space. Generally 37 characters per line including punctuation and a maximum time of six seconds per subtitle. It is a tricky game of checks and balances to create the perfect subtitle and the content is not only translated but also condensed to fit within these strict time frames. The subtitle will also capture any signs/words which appear in the actual film as well.

The skillset of a subtitling translator are different to the average translator in that they have to work with the strict guidelines mentioned above. A translator on the other hand can play around with sentences, paraphrase where needed and length is not so much an issue.

As you can see subtitling translation is a delicate profession.

Real-Time Subtitles (translated or same language)
This is the tricky task of an interpreter working with a stenographer at the same time to create the subtitle. The interpreter will translate the information into the target language and the stenographer types. Similarly, real-time subtitling is available in the same language and follows the same concept but without the interpreter. It is a highly challenging task for the stenographer in either scenario!

Section 1
Guide to your project

What you need to provide us:

You will need to provide us with the format of your video and if possible the original hard copy and in which format you want it.

You need to let us know the length of the video and its topic. If your project is on a larger scale our experienced project manager can organise a team of professional specialised linguists to work on your project.

You need to provide us with the transcription of the video for a translator. This helps the translator immensely when translating and also speeds up the whole process for both parties.

What is the purpose of the video? This can help our specialist subtitle translators understand best the scenario of your video and adapt the style of the subtitles accordingly.

Section 2
Which countries prefer dubbing .v. subtitling?

Dubbing is generally the preferred choice in larger rich countries. In Europe for example, this would be the case in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and England. In smaller countries such as Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands, subtitles provide a more economically friendly way of providing a translation without the cost.

The history of dubbing as a tool to promote political ideology in the 1930’s was a major factor in how dubbing became such a big part of the film industry in certain countries. However, since then subtitling has become popular in cultures where the population is happy to watch the original script and read the subtitles for authenticity. It certainly becomes evident that there is no major preference for either/or. It boils down to finance, culture and national identity.
