About Serbian

Serbian is a Serbo-Croatian language spoken by Serbs predominantly in Serbia. It is also an official language in Bosnia and Herzogovina, whilst it is recognised as a minority language in Croatia, Greece (in Mount Athos), Hungary, Montenegro, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Macedonia and Romania too.

The language is closely related to Bosnian, Croatian and Montenegrin, as the dialect serving as the main literary basis is Shtokavian, which also forms the basis of the aforementioned languages.

Serbian uses the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet, as well as Gaj’s Latin alphabet, the former having been developed in 1818 by Serbian linguist Vuk Karadzic.
