About Romanian

Romania is the seventh largest member of the EU by population. Its geographical position puts it in a prime position to connect with the EU, the CIS and the Middle East. Economic growth in the country has been fuelled by improvements in the industrial sector and domestic consumption and Romania is set to receive EUR 23 billion up until 2020, which will allow the country to invest further in its infrastructure, environmental and technology projects, healthcare, education and regional development. In the last 10 years trade in the Central and Eastern European area has amounted to £15 billion over the last 10 years for UK exports. For these reasons, the country is seen as a gateway to other markets in the CEE and beyond. 4 billion EUR have been invested in Romania to date from the UK and the UK is Romania’s 13th largest investor.

Romanian is a language which truly reflects a truly unique history. Historically, its landlocked position meant that Romania became isolated from other Latin romance languages from which it has its roots and did not progress as a Latin Romance Language. Then influences from Slavic languages resulted in a mixture of Latin Romance and Slavic languages and the language called Romanian.

How did this happen?

The Romans pushed their language upon the Dacian’s during their conquests in 106AD. When the Romans withdrew some 200 years later, the language then developed from the local language and Latin itself. During the Byzantine period, the language evolved further again and was influenced by Greek, Hungarian and Slavic languages. Later in 6AD the migration of Slavic tribes resulted in influences from these languages.

Today Romanian is spoken in Moldova as well as Romania. There are large immigrant communities to be found in Italy, Spain, France and Portugal. 5% of the Israeli population also speaks Romanian. There are speakers in the USA, Canada, Australia, Kazakhstan and Russia.

Although Romanian is categorised as a Romance language it is very different to other languages from the same family in terms of grammar and vocabulary because of its mixed history. Italian is the closest language to Romanian in terms of its Romance family history. 75% of vocabulary is Romance influenced followed by 15% from Slavic languages with the remainder from Greek and other languages.

There are four cases in Romanian and three genders and all adjectives and pronouns agree in gender number and case.

Like Scandinavian languages and Bulgarian, Romanian follows the same concept of placing definite articles at the end of the noun instead of before.

In Romanian, stress is an important factor in denoting meaning. Stress placed on different parts of the word can affect the meaning.

The Romanian’s use a Latin alphabet though the Cyrillic alphabet was used in Moldova as a result of the influences of the USSR. However

Like other Romance languages, adjectives from proper names such as nationality are not capitalized. Nor are names of months and days.

As can be seen Romanian is a language apart, unique from that of the countries which surround it. A language which tells its own history by its structure, words and mixture of influences from two language worlds Romance and Slavic.
