About Pashto

Pashto (also spelled as Pukhto or Pushto) and often known as Afghani, is an Indo-Iranian language spoken natively as the language of the Pashtun people of South Central Asia.

As well as being an official language in Afghanistan, it is also spoken in Iran and Pakistan, as well as the Pashtun diaspora around the world. There are believed to be between 50-60 million native speakers of Pashto.

Pashto was proclaimed the national language of Afghanistan in 1936 by royal decree. The other official language is Dari Persian.

In northern Afghanistan speakers of Pashto are called Pakhtūn, whilst in southern Afghanistan they are known as Pashtūn, and as Pathān or Afghan in Pakistan.
