Maltese translation – a language overview

Maltese, or Malti, is the official language of the Mediterranean island of Malta, as well as being spoken on the nearby island of Gozo. There are an estimated 400,00 native speakers of the language worldwide.

Maltese is also an official language of the European Union, making it the only Semitic language to be so distinguished.

The language was formed from the Siculo-Arabic or Sicilian Arabic alphabet, a form of Arabic present in Sicily and Malta between 900-1300AD. In Sicily, Siculo-Arabic became extinct around 1300AD. However, it continued to be spoken in Malta and eventually evolved into what we know today as Maltese.

Roughly half of the Maltese vocabulary features borrowings from standard Italian and Sicilian, meaning it is fairly closely related to both languages.
