Bosnian translation – a language overview

Bosnian is a standardised register of the Serbo-Croatian language, of the South Slavic group of the Indo-European family. It is one of the three official languages of Bosnia and Herzogovina, whilst it is also spoken natively in Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Croatia.

The modern form of the language uses both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets, although other scripts were used historically, such as the indigenous Bosnian Cyrillic called Bosančica (literally “Bosnian script”) which dates back to the late 10th and early 11th centuries AD.

Bosnian, or rather the name of the language itself, is controversial. Croats and Serbs commonly refer to it as Bosniak as an alternative. Of the three ethnicities within Bosnia (Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs), the Bosniak ethnicity are the only group who predominantly speak Bosnian.

Croats and Serbs believe that ‘Bosnian’ implies that it is the language of the Bosnians, which includes Bosnian Croats and Serbs, yet Croats and Serbs of course use Croatian and Serbian respectively. Despite that, it should be noted that all three languages are mutually intelligible and are examples of Ausbausprache.
