- Belarusian translation – a language overview
Belarusian belongs to the East Slavic branch of the Indo European family, making it very similar to both Russian and Ukrainian as they share many grammatical and lexical features. So much so, that most Belarusians are bilingual in Belarusian and Russian. An official language in Poland as well as Belarus, it is also classed as a minority language in Ukraine.
The language uses both the Cyrillic and Latin writing systems. However, since gaining independence in 1991, efforts efforts have been made to revive Belarusian writing in the Latin alphabet. One major problem is that nobody can agree on a spelling system.
