About Bulgarian

Bulgarian is a South Slavic language of the Indo-European family. It is spoken natively in natively in Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Kosovo, Moldova, Republic of Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, as well as emigrant communities around the world.

The language uses the Cyrillic script as its writing system, and it is mutually intelligible with Macedonian as its most commonly related language. It was the first of the Slavic languages to be attested in writing, appearing during the 9th century in the Glagolitic alphabet, which was gradually replaced by an early version of the Cyrillic alphabet over the following centuries.

Bulgarian is mainly split into two broad dialect areas, leading to the formation of Eastern dialects and Western dialects, which are informally called ‘soft speech’ (мек говор/mek govor) and ‘hard speech’ (твърд говор/tvurd govor) respectively.
